A Brief History of Meditation
Meditation is arguably a practice as old as humankind, with meditation practices shared from person to person—like favourite recipes passed down over hundreds of decades to feed the mind, body and soul.
The word ‘meditation’ itself has historical roots in two Latin words meditari, meaning to think or contemplate and mederi meaning to heal. It also stems from the ancient Indo-Aryan language, Sanskrit word Medha meaning intelligence.
The art of meditation is a practice with a deep history, that can be dated back thousands of years across many faiths and cultures. From its ancient ties to Hinduism and Buddhism to its influence in the counterculture of the swinging ‘60s and ‘70s, the benefits of meditation are no longer only reserved for and associated with Tibetan monks and hippies, but enjoyed by everyone of all beliefs.
The origins of meditation may be ancient, but its relevance remains as important as ever and its popularity ever growing. The largest online meditation documented by the Guinness World Records reached a mind-blowing 33, 061 participants, held in 2014 by the Chopra Center, founded by the guru and author Deepak Chopra.
With the thousands of meditation apps available and global companies like Google offering mindfulness programs that teach meditation, the benefits of meditation have never been more accessible.
